Lloyd Preston – A Biography
It all started…
Lloyd grew up in Horowhenua and started work in the music industry as a warehouse manager. This quickly developed into a sales representative roll covering NZ, thus giving him a wonderful opportunity to see our great country. The company he worked for moved to Auckland (along with most of NZ!) just as he was turning 21, thus giving Lloyd a great opportunity to move from his home town of Levin.
Time for a change…
After being in the music/book industry for 14 years and experiencing all aspects of the industry; warehousing, sales and marketing and retail, it was time for a change. This change entailed obtaining a qualification in Marketing. Part way through obtaining his qualification he discovered he had a natural flair for understanding how computers work and to the shock of some people really enjoyed accounting.
Teaching an old dog new tricks…
Although Lloyd started down the path of Marketing he switched to doing a double major in Accounting and Management Systems/Information Systems. As part of the training he managed to get some experience at Vodafone in the software development team. This was very enjoyable although he really enjoyed gaining work experience in the accounting industry and decided that this more him. So after almost 5 years Lloyd completed the double degree with the support of a wonderful wife, four young adorable kids (and a mortgage!).
After Uni comes the real world…
Michael Humphries and Lloyd met in 2001 and he started working for Humphries Associates as a graduate back in September 2001. His first key job as a junior was working in a corner office sorting through a mountain of client records, compiling year end financial accounts and completing a number of late taxation returns that clients had not filed. One thing this early experience did was show his strength (and strangely enough, his interest) in developing a systematic approach to running a business.
The real world gets better…
Working for Humphries Associates has the advantage of allowing opportunity to develop in our areas of interest and strength. Since those early days Lloyd has gained full Chartered Accountant status and has a Public Practice licence. He has been able to work with a number of clients in helping them choose, implement and manage accounting software systems. He has also had the pleasure of working with clients to assist in sorting out process within their business including employee issues, business processing systems, cash flow, budgeting, auditing, formation and structuring, succession planning, insurance and funding, management reporting, taxation advise, training staff and many other areas that make a business successful.
After the office doors are locked…
Once Lloyd's day in and out of the office is finished, he has the privilege of returning home to a great wife and four teenagers. They enjoy trying to run a lifestyle block in an urban environment. They currently have two farm puppies that they are training, a few chickens to keep them in fresh eggs, a couple of bee hives and his wife has a vegetable garden that occasionally needs a man's muscles to do some of the hard work. If it's not these activities that take up his time then he enjoys photography, reading a wide variety of books and doing some landscaping and home renovations. As a family they enjoy playing a variety of sports and when possible heading away to Leigh to enjoy the beach and sunshine.
